Called a "Houroku" (焙烙) in Japanese, this ceramic pot made in Aichi, Japan is perfect for making freshly roasted hojicha at home. The handle is hollow and serves as an easy serving spout to pour the freshly roasted green tea from without spilling. Pre-roasted hojicha is of course wonderful, but there are many aromatic compounds that are lost in storage and transit. By roasting your own tea at home you can fill your house with the incredible caramelizing smells of roasting tea and enjoy all the flavor your tea has to offer immediately.

How to Roast Hojicha:

Place the tea in the pot and hold over medium-low heat while shaking the pot to stir the dry leaves around for 1-2 minutes or until you’re satisfied with the color and smell.
Then pour through the handle-spout into your kyusu and serve while fresh.
While you can roast any tea you want (or even nuts or rice etc), we recommend making hojicha yourself with kukicha or bancha green teas. Click here to see the Houroku in action.

Care Instructions:

As this item is made from unglazed clay, please dry well after use and avoid leaving tea leaves in the pot overnight to prevent mold.
Wash with water and scrub with a light brush (such as a toothbrush) if necessary.
Avoid the use of soap or detergents, as they may soak into the clay.
Do not put in the dishwasher or microwave.

"The Philosophy of Tea is not mere aestheticism ... for it expresses conjointly with ethics and religion our whole point of view about man and nature. It is hygiene, for it enforces cleanliness; it is economics, for it shows comfort in simplicity rather than in the complex and costly; it is moral geometry, inasmuch as it defines our sense of proportion to the universe." - Kakuzo Okakura
