Gyokuro is the king of Japanese green teas, prized for its delicate flavor and exclusive nature. Cultivated with great skill, it requires careful shading of young leaves for about twenty days before harvest, a process that enhances its sweet, mellow umami taste while reducing astringency.

The most celebrated Gyokuro comes from Kyushu, particularly the Yame region in Fukuoka, which produces around 40% of Japan’s Gyokuro. Yame is renowned for its highest-quality tea, called Dento Hon Gyokuro, traditionally shaded with rice straw instead of plastic for a more refined flavor and aroma.

Compared to sencha, Gyokuro is smoother, more full-bodied, and richer in umami thanks to higher theanine levels. Its unique balance of mild astringency, natural sweetness, and lingering finish makes every sip a memorable experience for tea lovers.
